Nuh Violence | 101 women lawyers appeal to CJI to address economic marginalization

Yesterday, 101 women lawyers have collectively appealed to Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, urging him to promptly address the issue of communal hatred and calls for the economic boycott of specific communities in locations like Nuh and other violence-affected areas within Haryana.

Through a letter petition directed to the CJI, the Delhi High Court Women Lawyers Forum, represented by advocate Manali Singhal and others, has requested swift and effective instructions to the Haryana government.

Their aim is to cprevent hate speech and take measures against individuals responsible for propagating it. The forum has highlighted that these incidents directly defy the consistent directives issued by the Supreme Court, which emphasize action against instigators of hate speech and violence.

Certain panchayats in Haryana had issued mandates forbidding "Muslims or miscreants" from engaging in business or vending within their regions.

The forum expressed its approval for the spontaneous directives issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on August 7. These directives effectively put a halt to unauthorized demolitions carried out by the Haryana government in the aftermath of the riots.

The forum sought the issuance of the following directives to the Haryana government:

  • Promote an environment of dignity and liberty for citizens of all religions in Haryana and fraternity between communities by announcing programmes that highlight inclusion and awards for acts of communal harmony.
  •  Take steps in accordance with the directives of the Supreme Court to prevent incidents of hate speech.
  •  Track and ban videos that threaten harm to any community/ places of worship or urge the economic boycott of any community.
  •  Take immediate action against persons found responsible for committing acts of hate speech.
