Mumbai Court Grants Bail to 12 Shiv Sena Workers Held for Vandalising Kunal Kamra’s Show Venue

A Bandra magistrate’s court on Monday granted bail to 12 Shiv Sena workers, including Rahul Kanal, who were arrested for vandalizing a Mumbai hotel venue where comedian Kunal Kamra performed a controversial standup show.

The accused were released on personal bonds of ₹15,000 each.

The vandalism followed Kamra’s remarks during his performance, where he referred to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a "traitor." The comedian made the statement in reference to Shinde’s 2022 rebellion against then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, which led to the Shiv Sena split.

Kamra’s video from the show, posted on Saturday, further stirred controversy. Performing at the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, he mocked Shinde with a parody of a song from the Bollywood film Dil To Pagal Hai, ridiculing his appearance and political alliance with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Although Shinde’s name was not directly mentioned in the video, the remarks were widely perceived as directed at him.

A day after the video surfaced, Shiv Sena workers, allegedly led by Kanal, stormed the venue in protest. The police registered two separate cases—one against Kamra for his comments and another against those involved in the vandalism.

On Monday, 12 individuals linked to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction were arrested and presented before the court. Initially remanded to 14-day judicial custody, they were later granted bail.

Authorities have identified 19 people connected to the incident, with several still unnamed and others being traced.
