The Gujarat High Court has said that Orewa Group should come up with a positive solution regarding the payment of compensation to the relatives of the victims, as it was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Morbi suspension bridge that collapsed in 2022.
A division bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Anirudh P Mayi was hearing a PIL filed on October 30, 2022, in the matter of the collapse of the British-era suspension bridge on the Machhu river in Morbi.
135 people were killed in this incident. The court said that as far as compensation is concerned, the company will have to come up with positive solutions and concrete things. The Chief Justice orally said that
''You have to form a trust for compensation. What we suggested last time is that you have to take care of everyone till their last breath.''
He said that as far as the payment of compensation to the victims by the company is concerned, the company will present the affidavit of the authorized officials only after completing the process in this regard.
The case is scheduled for a hearing on February 26th. Acting on the court's direction, the state government provided details of the injured who required treatment.
In November 2022, the Supreme Court had instructed the Gujarat High Court to oversee the investigation, ensuring accountability and adequate compensation for the victims of the Morbi Bridge collapse. In response, the Gujarat High Court division bench of Chief Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice Ashutosh J. Shastri, initiated a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) based on a news article from the Times of India. During Diwali vacations, the court instructed the Registry to file the PIL through telephonic instructions, subsequently presenting the matter before the division bench for consideration.
The Morbi Bridge collapse occurred shortly after its reopening to the public, following repairs and maintenance by the Oreva Company. Four individuals were placed in judicial custody by the local court in Gujarat in connection with the incident. Notably, the Morbi Bar Association took a stance by passing a resolution, deciding not to represent any of the accused involved in the bridge collapse before the court.
