Modi Defamation | Gujarat Court rejects Petition seeking speedy trial

Recently, the Gujarat Court rejected a petition filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh.

The lower court had issued summons to both leaders in a defamation case related to alleged criminal defamation regarding comments made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degree.

To his reply, the Minister filed a petition seeking a speedy trial against the issuance of the summons."

The single-headed by bench Justice A.V. Hirpara rejected their petition. Kejriwal and Singh had requested a speedy hearing on their petition challenging the summons issued by the Metropolitan Court on Monday.

Their party leaders, through their lawyer, had asked the court to hear their plea before the respective cases are heard in the Gujarat High Court on August 29 and the Metropolitan Court on August 31.

Kejriwal and Singh had turned to the High Court to seek a stay on the criminal defamation proceedings until the disposal of their petition for a re-examination in the Sessions Court.
