West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed the Calcutta High Court on Monday that her comments regarding the sexual harassment allegations against Governor CV Ananda Bose were not defamatory.
Banerjee's counsel, former advocate general SN Mookheerjee, made these submissions before Justice Krishna Rao's single bench in response to a defamation suit filed by Governor CV Ananda Bose. The suit alleged that Banerjee's statement about women feeling unsafe to meet the governor, amidst sexual harassment allegations against him, amounted to defamation.
The CM's counsel argued that the remarks were not defamatory but were made in the public interest. Additionally, they contended that the governor's suit would not be maintainable.
Governor Bose's counsel stated that the plaintiff sought relief to restrain the CM and two other ruling dispensation MLAs from making further statements against him. The controversy arose when Banerjee claimed that two female Trinamool Congress MLAs had expressed feeling unsafe about visiting Raj Bhavan to take their oath of office administered by the Governor.
The plea has been adjourned for further hearing at a later date.
