Mahua Moitra withdraws defamation lawsuit against media in cash-for-query case

Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra has informed the Delhi High Court that she will not be pursuing legal action against media organizations in her defamation case regarding the 'cash for query' scandal.

Moitra's legal representative informed Justice Sachin Datta that she intends to seek redress exclusively against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey and advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai in her defamation case.

Advocate Abhimanyu Bhandari, representing Dubey, informed the court that Moitra had given an interview in which she acknowledged providing her parliamentary login ID and password to businessman Darshan Hiranandani. This revelation suggests that she may have committed perjury by contradicting her previous claims made in her lawsuit.

Advocate Siddhant Kumar, representing the news outlet ANI, argued that since Moitra was not pursuing relief against the media houses, she should update her lawsuit to accurately reflect her current position. This is important because there were allegations against the media outlets in the original suit, and any changes should be reflected in the legal documentation.

The Court instructed advocate Samudra Sarangi, who was representing Moitra, to make the necessary amendments to the list of involved parties in the case and then adjourned the proceedings for a later date.

Moitra has filed a case in court against Dubey, Dehadrai, and several media platforms, seeking legal orders for them to remove content that she claims contains defamatory allegations. Specifically, these allegations suggest that she asked questions in parliament related to the Adani Group in exchange for money from businessman Darshan Hiranandani.

In the lawsuit, a total of 15 media houses have been included as parties. Additionally, Moitra has requested legal remedies against X (formerly Twitter), Google, and YouTube, urging them to remove the content that she believes is defamatory and related to her from their platforms.
