In an unexpected move, Justices MS Ramesh and N Senthil Kumar of the Madras High Court paid a surprise visit to Puzhal Central Prison on the outskirts of Chennai on Wednesday.
Spending nearly three hours inside the facility, the judges inspected prison conditions, interacted with inmates, and assessed the overall infrastructure. Their visit shed light on both commendable aspects and areas requiring urgent attention.
According to sources, the judges expressed satisfaction with the quality of food served to prisoners and reviewed hygiene standards, including sanitation facilities and transparency in record-keeping. They also examined the prison's phone and video call services, acknowledging their significance in helping inmates stay connected with their families.
However, concerns were raised about the state of the prison hospital, with the judges emphasizing the urgent need for upgrades. They also underscored the importance of ensuring free legal aid for underprivileged prisoners and enhancing communication facilities for foreign convicts who often struggle to maintain contact with their families.
During their visit, the judges engaged directly with inmates to understand their grievances and living conditions.
Prison authorities welcomed the inspection, viewing it as a recognition of their efforts to improve the facility.
As per the sources, the official informed - "It was a completely unexpected visit. We are glad the judges acknowledged the progress we've made,"
On issues such as medical facilities and legal aid, the official added, "Some challenges go beyond our control, but we will work towards addressing them."
