Madras HC summons DGP and Home Secretary over RSS contempt of court plea

The Madras High Court has issued official notices to Tamil Nadu's Home Secretary, P Amudha, and the Director General of Police (DGP), Shankar Jiwal. These notices were issued in response to a batch of petitions filed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which claimed that state authorities had violated a court order by refusing permission for their route marches and public meetings, even though the court had previously approved them.

Justice G Jayachandran has instructed the state officials to appear before the court in four weeks.

Senior counsel G Rajagopal, representing the RSS members, informed the court that although it had issued a comprehensive order on October 17, 2023, directing the police to authorize the route marches in 35 locations throughout the state on October 22 and 29, the state had failed to comply with this order.

Additional Public Prosecutor R Muniyapparaj, on the other hand, requested more time, explaining that the State had filed an appeal before the Supreme Court. This appeal was expected to be heard on November 3.

The court, however, declined to delay the issuance of notice or provide additional adjournments. The court stated that it seemed "prima facie" that the Tamil Nadu government and the police were either incapable of managing the state or had willfully disregarded the court's order, showing a lack of respect for judicial directives.
