MP Court Denies Bail to ABVP Activists Accused of Taking Judge's Car to Rush Vice-Chancellor in Critical Condition to Hospital

The Madhya Pradesh Court denied bail to two ABVP activists who had been arrested for allegedly seizing a high court judge’s car parked at a railway station. Their purpose was to urgently transport the ailing vice chancellor of a private university to a hospital.

On Wednesday, Special Judge Sanjay Goyal, overseeing cases related to dacoity, dismissed the bail pleas of Himanshu Shrotriya (22), the secretary of ABVP Gwalior, and Sukrit Sharma (24), the deputy secretary. The judge's decision stemmed from the observation that assistance should be sought through civility rather than coercion.

As per additional government prosecutor Sachin Agrawal, Shrotriya and Sharma were apprehended on Monday and accused under the MP Dakaiti Aur Vyapharan Prabhavit Kshetra Adhiniyam (MPDVPK Act), an anti-dacoity legislation. Allegedly, they seized a car key from its driver at Gwalior railway station to transport an unwell individual to the hospital.

He said that the student organization's activists were presented in court on Tuesday, where they were remanded to judicial custody for a span of 14 days.

Judge Goyal, citing the police case diary, noted that an ambulance had arrived at the location while the accused were attempting to transport the ailing individual to the hospital in the car. The court emphasized that an ambulance is the proper vehicle for conveying a person in need of medical assistance to the hospital.

Meanwhile, calling the action against the activists “injustice”, the ABVP said it would launch a statewide agitation.

On Thursday, the outfit's MP secretary, Sandeep Vaishnav, mentioned, "The condition of a passenger aboard a train deteriorated significantly on Monday. ABVP members traveling from Delhi to Gwalior relayed this information to our representatives at Gwalior station." According to Vaishnav, the activists assisted the unwell individual off the train at Gwalior station. He alleged that despite their efforts, an ambulance did not arrive to aid the individual for approximately 25 minutes.

As the man's health continued to worsen, the ABVP activists quickly took him to a nearby hospital using a car parked outside the station.

Unfortunately, despite their efforts, he passed away, as reported by him to the gathered reporters.

“Had he reached the hospital in time, his life could have been saved. Later, it came to light that the vehicle in which the man was rushed to the hospital belonged to a high court judge,” Vaishnav said.

“We are going to launch a statewide agitation democratically against the injustice to our leaders,” Vaishnav added.

According to Gwalior's Inderganj City Superintendent of Police Ashok Jadon, the deceased passenger was identified as Ranjeet Singh (68), who held the position of vice-chancellor at a private university in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.

“The passenger died of cardiac failure, according to a preliminary post-mortem report. We handed over the body to his family members on Tuesday after the autopsy,” said the police official.
