Gujarat's Gandhinagar court has sentenced Asaram Bapu to life imprisonment in the case of rape of a disciple. Asaram was convicted by the Sessions Court DK Soni on Monday. The sentence was to be decided today i.e. on Tuesday. Asaram has been in jail since 2013. Asaram has been convicted under IPC sections 376 (2) (c), 377 (unnatural sex) and illegal confinement.
81 year old Asaram Bapu is currently in Jodhpur Jail. At the same time, a separate case is going on against Narayan Sai in Surat court. Two sisters had filed a complaint against Asaram and his son, alleging that they were raped between 1997 and 2006 at the Motera ashram run by Asaram and his son.
The Surat-based women had filed a case against Asaram and seven others in October 2013, alleging rape and illegal confinement. The younger sister had filed a complaint against Narayan Sai and the elder sister against Asaram. One of the accused died during the trial. A charge sheet was filed in the case in July 2014.
Asaram was arrested on 31 August 2013 by the Jodhpur police in another rape case. Since then he is lodged in jail. Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment in another case. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2018 by a Jodhpur court on charges of raping a student in 2013.
Apart from Asaram Bapu, the wife, son and three other people accused in the case were acquitted by the court on Monday due to lack of evidence. Asaram has been sentenced to life imprisonment under sections 376 and 377 in the sexual assault case. Public Prosecutor RC Kodekar said that the court has ordered ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 to the victim.
