Know the three new judges of the Supreme court

After the Central Government approved the appointment of three High Court Chief Justices as Supreme Court judges, they took oath last evening. The Chief Justice of India Sh. DY Chandrachud administered the oath. 

Delhi High Court Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Augustine George Masih and Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta were appointed as apex court judges.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended their names on 6th November 2023. Let us tell you that with the appointment of these three, the strength of Judges in the Supreme Court has now increased to 34. This is full strength.

Let's take a look at the history of these three judges.

Justice Satish Chandra Sharma

  • Born on 30th November, 1961 at Bhopal, Madya Pradesh.
  • Completed bachelor of science in 1981 with distinction and received a National Merit Scholership for Post Graduate Studies.
  • Took admission as a student of law in Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar in 1981 and obtained degree in 1984.
  • Enrolled as an advocate on 1st nov,1984.
  • Practiced in constitutional, civil and criminal matter in high court of Madhya Pradesh High Court, Jabalpur.
  • Appointed Additional Central Government counsel on 28th May, 1993 & senior panel counsel Government of India on 28th June, 2004
  • Designated as a Senior Advocate by the High Court of Madhya Pradesh in 2003 at the age of 42, being one of the youngest senior advocates of Madhya Pradesh High Court.
  • Elevated as an Additional Judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court on 18th January, 2008 and appointed as a Permanent Judge on 15th January, 2010 by former President Pratibha Patil.
  • Transferred to Karnataka High Court as Judge on 31st December, 2020 and took oath on 4th January, 2021.
  • Appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court on 31st August, 2021 and served till 10th October, 2021.
  • Elevated as Chief Justice of Telangana High Court on 11th October, 2021 and transferred to Delhi High Court as Chief Justice and took oath of office on 28th June, 2022.
  • He is an avid reader and is also known for his contributions to various Universities. He is associated with National Law Universities and is on the Advisory Board of National Law Institute University, Bhopal and India International University of Legal Education and Research, Goa.  
  • His father, Dr. B. N. Sharma, was a renowned professor of Jabalpur University and the Vice Chancellor of Barkatullah University, Bhopal. His mother, Smt. Shanti Sharma, was a Principal in Maharani Lakshmibai Higher Secondary School and also worked as District Education officer at Jabalpur before retirement.

Justice Augustine George Masih

  • Born on 12th March, 1963 at Ropar, Punjab.
  • Completed his schooling from St. Mary's Convent School, Kasauli (Himachal Pradesh) and Saifuddin Tahir High School, Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh).
  • Graduated in Science (Honours) and then LL.B. (Honours) from Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana on 6th June, 1987 and practiced in constitutional, service, civil and criminal matters before various courts and tribunals.
  • Hold the posts of Assistant Advocate General, Deputy Advocate General, and Additional Advocate General in the office of Advocate General, Punjab.
  • Designated as a Senior Advocate by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2005
  • Elevated as an Additional Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court on 10th July, 2008 and appointed as a Permanent Judge on 14th January, 2011.
  • Appointed as the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court on 30th May, 2023 and took oath of office on the same day, administered by Governor Kalraj Mishra.
  • He is an avid reader and has published numerous research articles and papers.

JUSTICE SANDEEP MEHTA

  • Born on 11th January, 1963 at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Practiced in trial courts, high court as well as supreme court.
  • Remained member of bar council of Rajasthan from 2003 to 2009. He remained vice-chairman, bar council of Rajasthan in 2004-2005. He remained chairman, bar council of Rajasthan in 2010.
  • He was elevated as the additional judge of the Rajasthan High Court on 30th May, 2011 and became permanent judge on 6th February, 2013.
  • He took oath as the chief justice of the Gauhati High Court on 15th February, 2023.
