Kerala HC emphasizes athlete protection to safeguard future generations

The Kerala High Court emphasized the need to provide assistance and protection to India's athletes, warning that failing to do so could result in a future generation lacking sporting talent.

Justice Devan Ramachandran emphasized that athletes are essential members of society, and support should not only be limited to traditional professions like doctors, lawyers, and engineers.

The Court was reviewing a petition from a young handball player from a middle-income background who had requested financial assistance to cover the costs of rehabilitating a ligament injury.

Justice Ramachandran was informed that she had no alternative but to seek help from the High Court because she lacked the funds necessary for the required surgery to address her injury. It was also brought to the Court's attention that the Kerala Sports Council had not yet responded to her request for financial assistance.

Expressing a significant concern over the situation, the Court had requested responses from the relevant authorities by November 3,

In its order accepting the case, the Court emphasized the necessity of extending vital support to the handball player currently before the Court, highlighting the potential loss of a promising athlete for the nation. The Court mentioned, "Typically, detailed orders at the admission stage of a Writ Petition are not required. However, I have chosen to do so in this instance because the failure to provide essential support to the petitioner now could result in the loss of a highly promising athlete for our nation. This is a matter that the Government of Kerala should also consider."

The Court has directed the legal representatives of the Kerala Sports Council and the State authorities to obtain instructions from these organizations regarding the matter. Additionally, the Court has requested responses from the Kannur District Sports Council and the Kerala Handball Association.
