Justice HS Thangkhiew has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya HC

On Wednesday, the Central government issued a notification formally announcing the appointment of Justice HS Thangkhiew as the Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.

Justice Thangkhiew will assume the responsibilities of the Chief Justice starting from Thursday, November 2, following the retirement of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee.

The Ministry of Law and Justice in the notification said,

"In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Shri Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 02.11.2023 consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Sanjib Banerjee, Chief Justice, Meghalaya High Court on 01.11.2023."

Justice Banerjee, who is retiring today, initially served as a judge of the Calcutta High Court in 2006. He was subsequently appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in January 2021 before being transferred to the Meghalaya High Court in November 2021.
