Future CJIs on Global Mission: Justices Gavai & Surya Kant in Kenya for Judicial Talks

Two senior Supreme Court judges, both in contention to become the Chief Justice of India, have traveled over 5,000 km to Kenya to engage in discussions on justice delivery with their counterparts from the African nation.

Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant are participating in a week-long exchange between the Supreme Courts of India and Kenya. The event, scheduled from March 7 to March 15, focuses on the theme: ‘Justice Delivery and the Adoption of Technology within the Judicial System.’

Justice BR Gavai will take part in a discussion on potential avenues for collaboration between the Supreme Courts of India and Kenya. Additionally, he will participate in an interaction focused on leveraging technology within the judiciary.

Justice Surya Kant will engage in a discussion on optimizing service delivery in the judiciary, exploring best practices, challenges, and innovative solutions. Both Indian judges will also deliver addresses at the University of Nairobi's law school. Martha K. Koome, Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya, will be actively involved in the interactions throughout the week-long judicial meet.

Interestingly, Martha K. Koome, Kenya’s first woman Chief Justice, visited India in 2023. During her visit, she attended a Supreme Court hearing, sat alongside a five-judge Constitution bench, met President Droupadi Murmu, and participated in several events.

Justice BR Gavai is next in line to become the Chief Justice of India. In addition to being one of the seniormost judges of the Supreme Court, he serves as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority. Following him in succession is Justice Surya Kant, who currently chairs the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee and is the chief patron of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association.
