Former Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal gets anticipatory bail

Yesterday, Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted Bail to the Former Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Bail.

The former CM was booked for allegedly facilitating the Kotkapura firing in which several protestors were injured by the police. The Single Bench of Punjab and Haryana High Court headed by Justice Raj Mohan Singh directed him to appear before the Hon'ble High Court within 15 days. The Bench also gave directions to the trial court to release him on interim bail "subject to its satisfaction."

"The grant of interim order would not be construed to confer any equitable consideration in favour of the Petitioner for the ultimate decision of this case on merits," the judge clarified.

Last Thursday, a Faridkot court has rejected his anticipatory bail plea in the case.

However, the trial court had granted interim protection from arrest to his father and former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on health grounds.

Last month, the additional director general of police (ADGP) LK Yadav-led special investigation team (SIT) had filed a chargesheet in the police firing case, naming Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir, who also held the home portfolio and former Punjab Police chief Sumedh Singh Saini among the accused.

The High Court bench of justice Raj Mohan Singh, while seeking a response from the Punjab government by May 30, has granted interim protection from arrest to the Akali leader.

Senior Advocate RS Cheema along with advocates DS Sobti, Shivkartar Singh, Arshdeep Singh Cheema, Tarunam Cheema and Arshdeep Singh Kler appeared for the Petitioner. On the other hand,  Additional Advocate General Gaurav Garg Dhuriwala represented the State.
