Former Calcutta High Court Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay has won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the Tamluk constituency in West Bengal, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to the Election Commission of India, Gangopadhyay secured 7,65,584 votes, defeating his closest competitor, Debangshu Bhattacharya of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), by 77,733 votes.
The Tamluk constituency is located in the Purba Medinipur district, a significant region for the BJP as Suvendu Adhikari, now a BJP leader, was elected from this seat twice on a TMC ticket in 2009 and 2014.
Gangopadhyay resigned from his judicial post in March 2023 to join the BJP, following a tenure marked by his outspoken criticism of the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government.
As a judge, Gangopadhyay was often at the center of controversies due to his contentious orders and statements. He notably accused Justice Soumen Sen of political bias, prompting the Supreme Court to intervene and transfer certain cases from his jurisdiction. Appointed as a High Court judge in May 2018, Gangopadhyay faced allegations of breaching judicial conduct norms, particularly after a televised interview in April 2023 about the 'School Jobs for Cash Scam' involving TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. This interview led to a rebuke from the Supreme Court, emphasizing that sitting judges should not engage with the media in such a manner.
In May 2023, the Election Commission imposed a 24-hour campaign ban on Gangopadhyay for his comments against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Despite these controversies, his transition from judiciary to politics has culminated in a significant electoral victory for the BJP in West Bengal.
