Former Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu granted medical bail in skill development case

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has issued a temporary release for former Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu due to medical reasons, granting him a four-week interim bail. He has spent more than 50 days in Rajamundry jail in connection with the Skill Development Scam case.

Justice T Mallikarjun Rao has issued temporary medical-based bail to Naidu, allowing their release for a four-week period.

On September 9, he was detained by the state crime investigation department, which asserted having initial evidence suggesting the former chief minister's significant involvement in the purported misappropriation of approximately Rs 371 crore from the Andhra Pradesh Skill Development Corporation. These actions were allegedly carried out through fictitious companies during the tenure of the Telugu Desam Party from 2014 to 2019.

In the previous month, the Andhra Pradesh High Court rejected Naidu's request to invalidate the First Information Report (FIR). In his argument, he contended that the trial court's decision to detain him did not take into account the fact that the Crime Investigation Department (CID) had not obtained prior approval from the governor, as mandated by Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

A panel led by Justice K. Sreenivas Reddy decided that obtaining prior authorization from the appropriate authority was not required for the investigation. This was because the alleged misuse of public funds, supposedly for personal benefit, did not qualify as an action carried out as part of official duties. The court also concurred that, due to the gravity of economic offenses, the investigation should not be impeded, particularly in the initial stages.
