Five new judges in Supreme Court: Central government notified the appointments

The Central Government has notified names of five judges for appointment as Supreme Court judges. The names are:

- Justice Pankaj Mithal (currently Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court);

- Justice Sanjay Karol (currently Chief Justice of Patna High Court);

- Justice PV Sanjay Kumar (currently Chief Justice of Manipur High Court);

- Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah (currently Judge of Patna High Court);

- Justice Manoj Misra (currently Judge of Allahabad High Court).

The five High Court Chief justices and judges were recommended for elevation by the Supreme Court Collegium on December 13. With these appointments, the working strength of the Supreme Court will go up to 32. The sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court is 34.

On 03.02.2023, the Supreme Court had scolded the Central government for delaying the appointments of the judges, who were recommended in December 2022.

A Bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S Oka had given the Centre an ultimatum to process the appointments within ten days, after Attorney General N Venkataramani had submitted that they would be done "soon".
