Ex-CJI Lalit has 28 support staff even after retirement: He still needs at least 12 at his new residence

As per the media report, Ex- Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit has presently 28 support staff with him and he has requested about 12 after he shifts to his new residence at Safdarjung Road in the new year. Presently he is residing in his Akbar Road residence. Justice Lalit has to vacate his Akbar Road residence since there is a likelihood of 5 new judges coming to the Supreme Court which could lead to a shortage of residential accommodation.

Recently in August 2022, the Central Government has amended the Supreme Court Judges Rules, 1959, and undertook to provide rent-free Type-VII Bangalow for six months to a retiring Chief Justice of India.

Justice Lalit remained Chief Justice of India for 78 days and he retired on 08th November this year. Usually, a CJI keeps 12-15 support staff at the residence during his tenure but Justice Lalit had kept 28 support staff during his stay after retirement. It is also reported that Justice Lalit had 40 supporting staff when he was CJI and residing at 24, Akbar Road.
