Delhi High Court will again hear the bail plea of JNU alumnus Sharjeel Imam and other accused in the conspiracy case related to Delhi Riots. The case was transferred to another court after Justice Siddharth Mridul was transferred to Manipur.
While hearing the case on Wednesday, the bench of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Shalinder Kaur said that each case will be heard separately.
During the hearing, the counsel for Delhi Police and the accused, appearing on behalf of Delhi Police, informed the bench that due to change in the earlier hearing bench, the case will have to be heard afresh. Senior advocate Rebekah Jaan, appearing for the accused, also said that the case has been pending for hearing for a year and now it should be heard.
On this, the bench directed to list Sharjeel Imam's case on January 15. The court directed to list the bail petition of accused Abdul Khalid Saifi on January 18, Gulfisha Fatima's petition on January 23, Meeran Haider's petition on January 24, Shadab Ahmed's petition on January 30 and Athar Khan's bail plea on January 31.
At the same time, the appeal petition of Delhi Police challenging the lower court's decision to grant bail to Ishrat Jahan was listed for hearing on January 29.
Sharjeel Imam and other accused are accused of masterminding the February 2020 riots and a case was registered against them under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code. In February 2020, 53 people were killed and more than 700 people were injured in the riots in North-East Delhi.
