Delhi HC Vacation Bench Takes Up World Boxing Champion Nitu Ghanghas' Plea for Arjuna Award Consideration in 2023

The Delhi High Court's Vacation Bench has taken notice of a plea submitted by Nitu Ghanghas, a world boxing champion. Her plea urges the authorities to consider and grant her the prestigious Arjuna Award for Outstanding Performance in Sports and Games (2023).

Nitu, a left-handed boxer hailing from the Bhiwani district in Haryana, achieved gold medals in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championship/World Cup held in New Delhi. Her talent was first spotted by coach Jagdish Singh, the esteemed founder of the Bhiwani Boxing Club and former mentor of the renowned boxer Vijender Singh.

Nitu's first success in the senior category came when she bagged the gold medal in the 48 kg category at Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament, 2022 held in Sofia, Bulgaria.

At just 23 years old, she stands as the sixth Indian boxer, regardless of gender, to attain the esteemed title of world champion. Her petition asserts that the omission of her name from the roster of Arjuna Awardees is unjust, unreasonable, and in violation of Article 14 of the Constitution of India.

Senior Advocate Mohit Mathur, representing Nitu in court, has presented that a representation concerning the exclusion of Nitu's name from the Arjuna Awardee list has already been submitted. In reply, CGSC Anil Soni has assured that the submitted representation will be duly reviewed. Responding to this, Justice Neena Bansal Krishna has scheduled the matter for further consideration on January 1, 2024, seeking a response regarding the representation.

Case Title: Nitu v. Sports Authority of India & Ors., W.P.(C) 16762/2023
