On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court mentioned that it is scheduled to consider Trinamul Congress leader Mahua Moitra's plea challenging the cancellation of her government accommodation on January 4.
The court took note of the fact that her appeal against expulsion from the Lok Sabha is set to be heard by the Supreme Court on January 3.
The bench, headed by Justice Subramonium Prasad, decided to adjourn the proceedings.
The counsel representing Mahua Moitra requested the court instruct the Directorate of Estates to submit a reply to the petition before January 4. However, the high court responded that it would entertain and consider this request on the next scheduled hearing date.
The petition has urged for the Directorate of Estates' order from December 11 to be set aside. Alternatively, it seeks permission for Moitra to maintain possession of the accommodation until the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are officially declared.
Senior advocate Pinaki Misra, representing Moitra, stated that the petitioner's request was solely to maintain possession of the government accommodation until May 31, 2024.
The Directorate of Estates was represented by Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma and Central Government Standing Counsel Anurag Ahluwalia.
Moitra was held guilty of "unethical conduct" and expelled from the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023 for allegedly accepting gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani and sharing her user ID and password of the Parliament website with him.
She has challenged her expulsion in the Supreme Court following the Lok Sabha's approval of its ethics committee's recommendation for her removal. The hearing for this case is scheduled for January 3, 2024.
