Delhi HC reserves its decision on Umar Khalid's plea seeking interim bail in the UAPA case

On Wednesday, a Delhi Court reserved its decision on student activist Umar Khalid's request for two weeks of interim bail in the larger conspiracy case of the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. Khalid has requested interim bail in order to attend his sister's wedding. While denying bail, the High Court noted that Khalid's name appears repeatedly in the chargesheet, beginning with the conspiracy behind the 2020 protests and ending with the ensuing riots.

The court also noted that Khalid was a member of WhatsApp groups such as DPSG and Muslim students at JNU, and that he had attended various meetings where the alleged conspiracy to commit riots was discussed.

Additional Meetings On Monday, Judge Amitabh Rawat will issue the order.

Khalid was represented by Senior Advocate Trideep Pais, while Delhi Police was represented by Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad.
The FIR 59/2020 being investigated by Delhi Police's Special Cell charges the accused with various violations of the Indian Penal Code as well as the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967.

In their opposition to Khalid's application, Delhi Police claimed that he is "likely to spread misinformation through social media" during his release and is also "likely to cause social unrest."

Stating that Khalid's parents are capable of making all necessary arrangements because his mother owns a boutique and his father leads a political party, the Delhi Police said:

"The release of applicant is further opposed as he is very likely to spread misinformation by use of social media during his interim bail period which cannot be prevented and is likely to cause unrest in the society. He may also influence witnesses."
