The High Court of Delhi has recently requested a new update from the Delhi government regarding the presence of cows and buffaloes on the streets of the national capital and the actions taken to address this issue.
Justice Subramonium Prasad has instructed the counsel for the Delhi government to submit a revised status report after consulting with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the BSES regarding any additional steps taken in this matter.
Justice Prasad emphasized that merely lodging FIRs and sending letters to BSES and DJB will not resolve the issue. The court anticipates tangible and effective actions from the respondents before the upcoming hearing, as stated in the order issued on October 16.
The High Court is currently addressing a petition that was filed in 2022. This petition seeks directives for the Delhi Government and civic authorities to take action in removing the presence of cows and buffaloes on the roads.
The petitioner, Satish Sharma, has additionally requested that the relevant department implement regular checks to prevent the accumulation of cows and bulls on the roads.
During the hearing, it was mentioned that since the initiation of the current writ petition, the respondents have undertaken various measures to prevent the gathering of cows and buffaloes on the roads.
Furthermore, it was explained that FIRs have been registered against individuals who have been negligent in allowing their cows and buffaloes to roam freely on the roads.
The counsel for the respondents indicated that they have written letters to the Delhi Jal Board, requesting the disconnection of water connections to illegal dairies.
It was mentioned that letters were also sent to BSES in January 2021, requesting the disconnection of electricity to illegal dairies.
