Delhi HC Initiates Action on PETA's Plea to Enforce Ban on 'Tongas' in Capital

Recently, the division bench of Delhi High Court, led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora, has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to respond to a plea filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The plea highlights the ongoing issue of horse-drawn carts, or 'tongas,' which are prohibited from operating in the national capital. PETA asserts that the MCD has not effectively enforced its resolution to phase out tongas and provide support for the livelihoods of their owners.

In response to PETA's concerns, the division bench has issued a notice to the MCD, scheduling a hearing for August 7th, 2024.

This move underscores the court's commitment to addressing animal welfare issues and ensuring the proper implementation of regulations while also considering the livelihoods of those affected by such measures.
