Delhi HC Halts Demolition: Orders DDA to Maintain Status Quo on 600-Year-Old Mosque in Mehrauli

In response to an urgent application filed by the Managing Committee of the Delhi Waqf Board, Justice Sachin Dutta of the Delhi High Court has issued a directive to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to uphold the current state of affairs regarding the demolition of the 600-year-old mosque in Mehrauli.

The next date of hearing in this case is scheduled for February 12. The court has specified that the status quo directive pertains solely to the khasra number housing the mosque, allowing the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to proceed with actions in the adjacent areas without obstruction.

The petition lodged by the Managing Committee of the Delhi Waqf Board, which has been pending since 2022, raises concerns about the alleged demolition of the mosque and madrassa on January 30.

During the court hearing, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) apprised the bench that the mentioned action was executed in accordance with the recommendations put forth by the religious committee.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) further stated that the religious committee, prior to making the decision, provided a hearing opportunity to the CEO of the Delhi Waqf Board. Conversely, the legal representative for the Managing Committee of the Waqf Board contended that the religious committee lacks the authority to issue directives for demolition actions.
