The redevelopment plan for Shri Kalkaji Mandir in South Delhi has received the green light from the Delhi High Court, with Justice Prathiba M Singh overseeing the approval process. In response to a series of pleas addressing civic amenities and cleanliness around the temple complex, Justice Singh directed the temple administrator to transmit the architects' layout plan to the Town Planning Department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Emphasizing the need for collaboration, the court urged MCD officials to conduct a joint meeting with the architects and the administrator to initiate the initial landscaping phase and kickstart the approval process for the temple's redevelopment.
The court's recent order also highlighted that the MCD should inform the architects if any approval is required from the Ridge Management Board, Delhi. The proposed redevelopment, illustrated through plans, sketches, and a video, received the court's approval, with a requirement for a progress report by January 12.
Additionally, the court specified that the redevelopment plan should be forwarded to the Department of Delhi Fire Services at an appropriate stage.
Crucially, the court emphasized that the approved redevelopment plan does not diminish the existing land rights of the temple. Rather, it aims to enhance amenities and accessibility for devotees. In 2021, Justice Singh appointed retired high court judge Justice J R Midha as the temple administrator.
The court also mandated the removal of encroachments and unauthorized occupants, appointing architect Goonmeet Singh Chauhan to devise a redevelopment plan for both the temple and its surrounding complex.
