Delhi HC directs WhatsApp and Telegram to Deactivate Piracy Channels for Shahrukh Khan's Movie "Jawan"

Recently, the Delhi High Court directs WhatsApp and Telegram to delete all the groups and channels circulating and selling pirated copies of Shahrukh Khan's movie Jawan.

The High Court on Tuesday passed the direction on a plea moved by film producer Red Chillies Entertainment against piracy.

Further, the single-heeaded bench of Justice C Hari Shankar directed WhatsApp, Telegram and mobile network operators to to reveal the subscriber information associated with the mobile numbers linked to these groups and channels. This disclosure is intended to facilitate the initiation of legal proceedings.

The petitioner Red Chillies moved the plea after identifying one Rohit Sharma who was selling pirated copies of the movie through WhatsApp.

To this, the Court directs Meta to deactivate his WhatsApp number, his Facebook page as well Instagram pages.

The High Court also said that similar action is to be taken against admins of other WhatsApp groups and Telegram channels after they are identified.

Senior advocate Raj Shekar Rao represented Red Chillies in this case. The plea also noted that a police complaint was lodged against Rohit Sharma and other individuals in Mumbai on September 13th. The activities of these pirates were detected by agents working on behalf of the movie's producer, "Jawan."
