The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) informed the Delhi High Court on January 4 that the Delhi Government "is not inclined" to contribute to the payment of unpaid arbitral award dues to the Reliance Infrastructure-promoted Delhi Airport Metro Express Private Ltd. (DAMEPL). Justice Yashwant Varma took note of the affidavit filed by DMRC, in which it was stated that the Delhi government is not inclined to provide Rs. 3565.64 Crores in equity for payment of the arbitral amount with interest.
On behalf of the Central Government and DMRC, Attorney General R. Venkataramani told the court that the matter is being actively considered and deliberated by appropriate authorities, and that they are hopeful that it will be resolved by January 16.
“Accepting the statement so made, let the matter be called again on January 19,” the court said.
The court is hearing a petition filed by DAMEPL seeking enforcement of the May 11, 2017 arbitration award. In 2008, DMRC had signed a contract with DAMEPL, related to "the design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the line". As of September 6, 2022, DMRC owed Rs.7,010.08 Crore to the Reliance subsidiary. DAMEPL has been paid a total of Rs.2,599.17 crore so far. The DMRC had requested Rs 3500 crore from both the Centre and the Delhi government.
