Delhi Court Seeks Response from Police on Bail Plea of Ex-JNU Student Umar Khalid in 2020 Delhi Riots Case

A local court on Wednesday sought a response from the Delhi Police regarding the bail petition submitted by former JNU student Umar Khalid, who is accused in the purported broader conspiracy linked to the 2020 Delhi riots.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai presided over the hearing of Khalid's recent application seeking regular bail. Khalid faces charges under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

"Copy of the bail application along with documents has already been supplied to the prosecution. Reply to the present bail application be filed by the prosecution on the next date, with advance copy to the counsel for the applicant or accused (Khalid)," the court said.

The case has been scheduled for March 11 for the submission of replies and arguments regarding the bail application. Among the twenty individuals implicated in the purported broader conspiracy to instigate communal riots are activists Sharjeel Imam, Khalid Saifi, and former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain. The investigation of the case falls under the purview of the Special Cell of Delhi Police.
