Decide Swiftly on ₹5,000 Fine Proposal for Mosquito Breeding : Delhi HC Urges Central Govt

On Friday, the Delhi High Court urged the Central government to promptly make a determination regarding the proposal forwarded by the Delhi government. This proposal seeks to elevate the fine from ₹500 to ₹5,000 for activities that contribute to mosquito breeding.

A Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora also directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to submit a comprehensive status report. This report should include all relevant facts and figures, providing details on the incidence of dengue across the 12 zones of the national capital.

The MCD has been instructed to submit the report within three weeks. The case is scheduled to be reviewed on March 19th. The Court issued this directive while deliberating on two suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) petitions concerning the mosquito and mosquito-related issues prevailing in the city.

Amicus Curiae Rajat Aneja informed the Court that according to the latest report submitted by the MCD, certain zones in Delhi have witnessed a staggering 300% surge in dengue cases over the past three months.

Aneja highlighted that the High Court has been overseeing this issue for over three years, yet the number of cases has continued to escalate. In response, the Bench commented that the 300% increase is attributable to the High Court's monitoring; otherwise, it could have surged by 3000%.
