In a dramatic turn of events, Suneetha Narreddy, the daughter of late MP YS Vivekananda Reddy, has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Telangana High Court's decision to grant anticipatory bail to Kadapa Member of Parliament (MP) YS Avinash Reddy in connection with her father's murder. The case has caught nationwide attention, and a vacation Bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal has agreed to list the matter on June 13, Tuesday.
The appellant's legal counsel, Senior Counsel Sidharth Luthra, expressed deep concern over the lack of cooperation from YS Avinash Reddy, stating, "They do not cooperate on summons. Then he avoids the probe on account of mother's illness. The accused is the principal conspirator in my father's murder... my father was killed... High Court did not grant interim protection initially." Luthra emphasized the need for careful examination of the High Court's findings, which were allegedly based on media reports.
The Telangana High Court had previously granted anticipatory bail to YS Avinash Reddy on May 31, citing the absence of direct evidence to establish his participation in the larger conspiracy surrounding YS Vivekananda Reddy's murder. The court further noted that the case relied heavily on hearsay evidence and lacked allegations of interference in the investigation, tampering of evidence, or witness intimidation, apart from the claim of destruction of the crime scene.
Suneetha Narreddy's appeal challenges the High Court's decision, arguing that the single judge conducted a "mini-trial" and made comments on the merits of the case. Concerns were also raised about the potential for witness intimidation, as the accused, being an MP, holds influence and has already shown non-cooperation with the investigating agency.
The murder of YS Vivekananda Reddy, a former Kadapa MP, shook the nation in March 2019 when he was fatally stabbed at his residence. In 2020, the Andhra Pradesh High Court transferred the murder investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and the Supreme Court later directed the trial to be conducted in a Special CBI Court in Hyderabad.
The Supreme Court had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the Telangana High Court's delay in deciding the plea, leading to its intervention and subsequent hearing, resulting in the grant of anticipatory bail. Additionally, in April, the Supreme Court overturned a Telangana High Court order that had imposed restrictions on the CBI's interrogation of Avinash Reddy.
As this high-profile case continues to unfold, all eyes are now on the Supreme Court's hearing on June 13, where crucial legal arguments and developments are expected to take place.
