Today, the Chief Justice of Kenya, Martha K. Koome was present in the Supreme Court of India for the hearing of the hearing in ShivSena Case.
The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud gave warm welcome to her.
CJI in his speech said -
We are very honoured to have in our midst Chief Justice Martha Koome, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Kenya. Not the least of her achievements is that she is the first woman chief justice of the country",
Further, "She is a judge of high erudition, who has written extensively including on issues pertaining to constitutional law in India. She recently wrote a judgment on the extent to which basic structure doctrine will apply in Kenya", CJI stated. He added that she was also a part of the bench which decided on the recognition of LGBTQ rights in Kenya.
"We have given her a brief wrap-up of what is being argued here. We have been as objective as possible in trying to tell her what the matter is", CJI said.
Earlier, the Chief Justice of Singapore Sundaresh Menon had attended the proceedings before the CJI DY Chandrachud. Last week, the Kenyan Supreme Court delegation led by Chief Justice Martha Koome called the President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu and interacted with the officials of the Ministry of Law and Justice.
