Today, the Chhattisgarh High Court has joined the increasing roster of Indian High Courts that are live-streaming their proceedings on YouTube.
The court has started live-streaming hearings from courtrooms 1, 3, and 5 via its official YouTube channel. This initiative is aimed at improving transparency and making court hearings more accessible to the general public.
The practice of live-streaming court proceedings originated with the Gujarat High Court, which introduced its YouTube channel for this purpose in October 2020. Subsequently, various other High Courts, including those in Kerala, Karnataka, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Patna, Jharkhand, and Calcutta, have adopted this practice as well. These High Courts have all recognized the significance of offering public access to court proceedings, thereby fostering better comprehension and confidence in the legal system.
In a somewhat restricted capacity, even the Supreme Court of India has taken measures to facilitate live-streaming. The Court has enabled Constitution Bench hearings to be viewed on YouTube, enabling interested parties to observe the unfolding of these pivotal cases.
The said decision, is commendable and indicates a progressive approach towards ensuring transparency and openness in the judicial process. This move will undoubtedly strengthen public trust in the judiciary and promote accountability.
