Chandigarh University video leak Case: The P&H High Court granted bail to the Army man Sanjeev Singh

Sanjeev Singh, an Army officer who was detained in September as part of the Chandigarh University video leak investigation, was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on December 19. The entire inquiry is over, and the accused cannot be imprisoned indefinitely, Justice Amarjot Bhatti stated in the decision.

"The chargesheet is yet to be framed, thereafter the prosecution evidence will be recorded. The petitioner was arrested in this case on 24.09.2022 and since then he is in judicial lock up. Trial of this case may take a long time," said the court.

Using a statement made by the management of the university's girls' hostel, Kharar police in Mohali, Punjab, filed an FIR in September. A female student was charged in the statement with filming other students in the dorm in lewd ways.

The girl and a co-accused were named in the FIR, but Singh's name came up over the course of the investigation. He is accused of violating Sections 66 (C), 66 (D), 66 (E), 67A, and 84 (C) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, as well as Sections 354A, 354C, 354D, 506, 509, and 511 of the IPC.

His attorney said that he was wrongfully accused in the case and that he had not produced any explicit video or taken any explicit pictures. He argued that even if the prosecution's case were to hold up, he had only received an offensive film and had not shared it with anyone. There was a claim that he had been detained since September 24.

The State, on the other hand, stated that the charges against the petitioner-accused are detailed and serious in character and that a specific role has been attributed to him, while at the same time noting that the challan had previously been presented before the trial court. The State additionally argued that the petitioner is not entitled to be freed on bail because charges have not yet been filed in this case and given the seriousness of the offences.
