Central Government should collect data of social security schemes for disabled people : SC

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Center to collect data from all states and union territories on social security schemes launched for persons with disabilities compared to schemes launched for other sections of the society.

A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud issued the direction while hearing a petition seeking implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

The said Act provides 25% more assistance to disabled people than others under similar social welfare schemes. The top court asked the central government to collect data and submit a status report within six weeks.

The bench also included Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra.

Earlier, on September 25, the apex court had issued a notice to the Central Government seeking its response on the petition filed by Delhi-based organization 'Bhumika Trust'. The court had requested Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati to assist the Supreme Court in the case.
