On December 20, the Gujarat High Court orally asked the state government to take action in response to the state's stray cattle problem, observing that it had grown out of proportion. "Yesterday, in Rajkot one defence personnel has been attacked and he is in a serious condition...This is what I saw on TV...This cattle menace issue has gone out of proportion. Do something for it, Mr. Advocate General," a bench led by Chief Justice Aravind Kumar said.
The bench is currently hearing a slew of petitions concerning the stray cattle problem in Ahmedabad and other major Gujarat cities. When the case came up for hearing on Tuesday, the State requested an adjournment to consider suggestions made by advocate and party-in-person petitioner Amit Panchal, who has filed a contempt petition alleging non-implementation of the Gujarat High Court's order directing the state authorities to control the stray cattle menace issues. It should be noted that during an earlier hearing in the case, the High Court asked the state and city administrations to ensure that stray cattle are not found on city and rural streets. The Court had also taken note of the death of a man in Naroda after being hit by a cow in October 2022. In fact, the High Court had made a pointed observation that the state government's efforts to combat the stray cattle problem had largely remained on paper.
