In a significant legal move, the Andhra Pradesh government has taken the matter to the Supreme Court, challenging a decision by the state's high court that granted regular bail to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu in connection to the Skill Development Corporation scam case.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court, on November 20, ruled in favor of Naidu's bail, emphasizing the need for judicious, humane, and compassionate exercise of authority in such matters. This decision prompted the state government to file a Special Leave Petition against the high court's judgment, asserting that the court's examination of the case's facts and its subsequent conclusions were not only factually inaccurate but also had the potential to influence the lower court proceedings.
The high court's decision marked a transformation of Naidu's initial four-week interim medical bail into unconditional bail, facilitating the release of the former chief minister. The court considered various factors, including Naidu's age, health conditions, the absence of a flight risk, and other relevant considerations.
Naidu, who recently underwent cataract surgery at L V Prasad Hospital in Hyderabad, had been arrested on September 9. He was initially granted interim medical bail on October 31, a status that has now been upgraded to regular bail. The charges against Naidu relate to allegations of misappropriating funds from the Skill Development Corporation, purportedly causing a loss of over ₹300 crore to the state exchequer.
