Amazon Prime Video's India head Aparna Purohit granted anticipatory bail by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India granted anticipatory bail to Amazon Prime Video's India Head Aparna Purohit in the FIR lodged against her and the company on the issue of the web series "Tandav."

Bench Comprising of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and MM Sundresh granted bail to her and directed her to cooperate in the investigation. Earlier on 5th March 2021, she was given interim protection from arrest by the Supreme Court which got confirmed on Friday.


"In view of the statement made, we confirm the interim order and direct that in the event of the appellant Aparna Purohit being arrested, she shall be released on bail by the arresting officer/trial court on terms and conditions to be fixed by the trial court."

The Director of the web series Ali Abbas Zafar, Producer Himanshu Mehra, Writer Gaurav Solanki Actor Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub and Aparna Purohit were earlier declined relief by the Supreme Court on 27th January 2021 for no coercive steps. The Apex Court while declining relief held that they could apply for bail from the concerned court in the FIR lodged in connection with the web series.

They are accused of the inappropriate depiction of Uttar Pradesh Police, Hindu deities, and also the Character portrayed of the Priminister of India Narendra Modi.

Sr. Advocate Mukul Rohatgi and Sr. Adv. Siddharth Luthra appeared for her and for the State of Uttar Pradesh Sr. Adv. Garima Prasad, Additional Advocate General appeared to oppose the bail.
