“Email it to me and we’ll see…”: CJI in Chandigarh mayoral elections case

The Chandigarh mayoral elections have plunged into controversy, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) taking the matter to the Supreme Court after the Punjab and Haryana High Court denied relief for new elections. The AAP's challenge revolves around allegations of vote tampering, particularly focusing on the victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Manoj Sonkar.

Senior advocate Manu Singhvi, representing the AAP, brought attention to purported instances of vote tampering during the Chandigarh mayoral elections, which saw Manoj Sonkar's triumph on Tuesday. Singhvi pointed to video evidence allegedly showcasing irregularities in the conduct of the elections.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud has made significant remarks regarding the matter, expressing the Supreme Court's willingness to consider the case promptly. "Email it to us, we'll consider it at 1 pm," the Chief Justice stated, indicating the urgency with which the court intends to address the issue. The Supreme Court aims to decide when to formally hear the case during this session.

Prior to approaching the Supreme Court, the AAP had sought intervention from the Punjab and Haryana High Court to halt the Chandigarh mayoral elections, which the High Court declined to do so. Judges Sudhir Singh and Harsh Bangar of the High Court bench refused to grant interim relief to the AAP, despite the party's allegations of tampering with ballot papers. AAP had demanded fresh elections under the supervision of a retired judge of the court. The High Court issued a notice to the Chandigarh administration, mandating a response within three weeks.
