She is requesting that she be awarded a joint silver medal after being disqualified for being 100 grams overweight during the morning weigh-in. A source from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), part of the visiting Indian contingent, confirmed the development to PTI.
She was taken to a polyclinic at the Games Village due to severe dehydration, which resulted from her desperate measures to meet the weight limit, including fasting, avoiding fluids, and staying up all night to sweat it out.
An ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has been established to resolve disputes arising during the Olympic Games or within the 10 days preceding the Opening Ceremony. The matter will be addressed on Thursday morning.
Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who lost to Vinesh in the semifinals, stepped in for her in the final against American Sarah Ann Hildebrandt. Hildebrandt won the bout and claimed gold, while Vinesh is now hoping that CAS will award her a joint silver medal with Lopez.
According to CAS rules, claimants must first exhaust all internal remedies available under the statutes or regulations of the relevant sports body before filing a request. The only exception is when the time required to exhaust these remedies would render an appeal to the CAS Ad Hoc Division ineffective. However, United World Wrestling (UWW) has informed the IOA that the current weigh-in rule leading to Vinesh's disqualification cannot be changed at this time.
Vinesh made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in her category on Tuesday night, and she was assured of at least a silver medal before her disqualification.
