Union Law Ministry Greenlights Establishment of Regional Supreme Court Benches Nationwide

The Union Law Ministry has accepted the proposal made by the department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law, and Justice last year to establish regional benches of the Supreme Court across India.

Yesterday, the Committee submitted a report concerning the actions taken on its 133rd report titled "Judicial Processes and Their Reforms." The 133rd Report was presented to the Rajya Sabha on August 7, 2023, and was laid on the table of the Lok Sabha on the same day. Eight months later, the Committee has issued a report detailing the actions taken by the Ministry of Law & Justice in response.

The committee had made 22 recommendations in the report. In the action taken report, the replies of the government have been categorized into four chapters.

1. RECOMMENDATIONS/OBSERVATIONS WHICH HAVE BEENACCEPTED BY THE GOVERNMENT

  • FEASIBILITY OF REGIONAL BENCHES OF SUPREME COURT
  • PREPARATION AND PUBLICATION OF ANNUAL REPORTS BY THE SUPREME COURT AND HIGH COURTS

2. RECOMMENDATIONS/OBSERVATIONS WHICH THECOMMITTEE DOES NOT DESIRE TO PURSUE IN VIEW OF THE REPLIES GIVEN BY THE GOVERNMENT

  • EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITIES OF INCREASING THE RETIREMENT AGE OF HIGH COURT AND SUPREME COURT JUDGES
  • VACATIONS IN THE SUPREME COURT AND HIGH COURTS

3. RECOMMENDATIONS/OBSERVATIONS IN RESPECT OF WHICH THE COMMITTEE DOES NOT ACCEPT THE REASONS GIVEN BY THE GOVERNMENT AND REITERATES ITS RECOMMENDATION

  • SOCIAL DIVERSITY IN APPOINTMENT OF JUDGES IN THE SUPREME COURT AND HIGH COURTS
  • EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITIES OF INCREASING THE RETIREMENT AGE OF HIGH COURT AND SUPREME COURT JUDGES
  • VACATIONS IN THE SUPREME COURT AND HIGH COURTS

4. RECOMMENDATIONS/OBSERVATIONS IN RESPECT OF WHICH FINAL REPLIES OF THE GOVERNMENT HAVE NOT BEEN RECEIVED

  • MANDATORY DECLARATION OF ASSETS BY THE JUDGES OF THE SUPREME COURT AND HIGH COURTS
