Sharjeel Imam Moves HC Seeking Postponement of Film on 2020 North-East Delhi Riots

Today, Sharjeel Imam approached the Delhi High Court, requesting a delay in the release of a film centered on the 2020 North East Delhi riots.

The movie, titled "2020 Delhi," is set to release on February 2, just three days before the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections.

Justice Sachin Datta issued a notice on the plea, scheduled for tomorrow. However, the Court also listed the matter for a hearing today at 2:30 PM.

The respondents in the plea include the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Central Board of Film Certification, Delhi Police, the film's director Devendra Malviya, Visual Birds Institute and Studio (VIBES) Private Limited, and producers Nandkishor Malviya, Ashu Malviya, and Amit Malviya.

The petition has been filed through Advocates Ahmad Ibrahim, Talib Mustafa, and Ayesha Zaidi.

Sharjeel Imam has requested that the Court conduct a pre-screening of the movie. He has also called for the postponement of its release until the trial in the UAPA case related to the riots is concluded. Additionally, the plea seeks the removal or takedown of all photos, posters, videos, teasers, and trailers of the film until the trial ends.

The petition alleges that the film's creators have “intentionally and deliberately” undermined legal processes, disregarded the constitutional framework, and falsely portrayed the events surrounding the riots.

It further claims that the trailer prominently features Imam as the main character, which could negatively impact his right to reputation and his right to live with dignity.
