Sharjeel Imam granted bail in 2019 Sedition Case

Addl. Sessions Judge has granted bail to Sharjeel Imam, a former JNU Student in a sedition case where the accusation against him is of delivering a provocative speech that allegedly led to violence in the Jamia Nagar area in 2019.

While granting bail, the court observed that the accused/applicant Sharjil Imam is in custody for more than 31 months since his arrest on 17.02.2020.

The court also noted that the Supreme Court has kept prosecution of all cases in abeyance regarding offenses under section 124A of IPC.

Imam had filed this application for bail under section 436A of the Code of Criminal Procedure which provides that an accused can be released on bail once he has undergone half of the sentence prescribed under the alleged offenses.

It is to be noted that Imam would not be released since he is in custody in another case too.
