On Friday, Narayan Sai, who identifies himself as a spiritual leader, appealed to the Gujarat High Court for temporary release to visit his incarcerated father, Asaram Bapu, who is currently unwell.
Both Sai and Asaram Bapu are currently serving prison sentences after being convicted in separate rape cases. During yesterday's hearing of Sai's temporary bail plea, a division bench of Justices AS Supehia and Vimal Vyas expressed skepticism, stating that they would need to verify Sai's claims about his father's health as they did not trust him.
Senior Advocate IH Syed represented Sai and informed the bench that his client wished to visit his ailing father.
Significantly, the Court had previously rejected a similar bail plea by Sai on February 3, citing his submission of forged medical documents in a previous bail application. As a result, he was fined ₹1 lakh for this offense in the High Court.
"We want to know the reasoning given by him (Asaram) in his application. And also the reasoning of the Rajasthan High Court in dismissing the plea," the bench said.
Furthermore, the bench observed that the Rajasthan High Court had recently denied a parole application filed by Asaram.
However, the Court insisted that the order from the Rajasthan High Court be presented on record before any decision is made regarding Sai's temporary bail plea. The case is scheduled to be heard again next week.
Sai was arrested on December 4, 2013, in relation to a rape case. He was found guilty by a Surat court in 2019 and received a sentence of rigorous life imprisonment. Subsequently, he has been released four times: in April 2015, February 2019, December 2020, and January 2022.
