The Supreme Court has ruled that while the leather industry in India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, is a key contributor to the country's economy, it cannot justify harming the environment, damaging ecosystems, and threatening public health.
The court highlighted that tanneries are highly polluting, with untreated effluents from the industry severely damaging the River Palar, groundwater, and agricultural land in Vellore. It directed the Tamil Nadu government to compensate affected families and recover the costs from the polluters, as per earlier court awards.
A committee will also be set up to audit the environmental damage and help restore the region's health.
The court emphasized that environmental degradation, including water pollution, is a growing global issue that poses a threat to life. Despite the leather industry's economic importance, the court condemned the health and environmental harm caused to local workers and residents.
The court ordered the state to conduct regular inspections of tanneries, enforce environmental standards, and publish inspection reports. It also called for an environmental audit of rivers and recommended the imposition of effluent charges on polluting industries. Additionally, strict action will be taken against illegal sand mining in the state.
This judgment stresses the need for balanced development that protects both the economy and the environment.
