A directive has been issued by the Supreme Court on Monday instructing a trial court to refrain from taking any coercive measures against Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo, Arvind Kejriwal, in connection with a 2018 defamation case.
The incident stems from a 2018 defamation case where a retweet by Kejriwal of a video by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee became the subject of legal scrutiny.
During the court proceedings, the acknowledgment was made by Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, that the retweet was a "mistake" and expressed Kejriwal's desire for the case to be closed. Singhvi stated before the bench of Justices Sanjeev Khanna and Dipankar Dutta, "I have no problem in admitting that this was a mistake."
Responding to Kejriwal's admission, the complainant in the case was urged by the Supreme Court to consider whether the matter could be resolved based on the acknowledgment of the mistake.
Raghav Awasthi, the advocate for the complainant, concurred with this approach.
As a result of these developments, the trial court has been directed not to take any coercive steps against Kejriwal, offering a temporary reprieve in the legal proceedings.
The court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for March 11.
