SC denies urgent hearing on Gyanvapi Mosque prayer dispute

The Supreme Court of India has declined an urgent hearing for the Gyanvapi Mosque Committee's plea, escalating a legal dispute over prayer rights at the historic mosque in Varanasi. The plea was lodged in response to a recent ruling by the Varanasi District Court, permitting Hindus to conduct prayers within the southern cellar of the mosque.

The urgency of the plea became apparent following the issuance of the District Court's order on the afternoon of January 31, prompting immediate action from the Committee of Management, Anjuman Intezamia Masajid, Varanasi.

Seeking to maintain the status quo at the sacred site, the committee promptly filed an application with the Supreme Court, expressing concerns that the District Court's decision could pave the way for Hindu prayers to be conducted within the mosque's premises without delay.

In a bid to secure an expedited hearing, the mosque committee's legal representatives undertook concerted efforts, including a late-night visit to the residence of a Supreme Court registrar. However, their endeavors proved futile as they were informed the following morning that the Chief Justice of India had directed them to pursue their grievance through the Allahabad High Court.
