Retired Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi appointed as chairperson of the newly formed Law Commission

The Central Government has established the 22nd Law Commission of India, which will be chaired by former Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi. The Commission will also include former Kerala High Court judge Justice KT Sankaran, Prof. Anand Paliwal, Prof. DP Verma, Prof.(Dr) Raka Arya, and Shri M. Karunanithi.

Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi was recently in the news as the judge who presided over the Karnataka High Court bench that issued the hijab ruling.

Chief Justice Awasthi was born on July 3, 1960, and received his law degree from Lucknow University in 1986. On February 1, 1987, he enrolled as an advocate.

Justice KT Sankaran was a judge of the Kerala High Court from February 2005 to December 2016. For the first time in the country, Justice Sankaran sparked controversy in 2009 by proposing the theory of "love jihad."

Justice KT Sankaran served on the Kerala High Court from February 2005 to December 2016.

A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the delay in forming the Law Commission. The Center recently informed the Supreme Court that the issue of a uniform civil code will be brought before the Law Commission of India as soon as it is formed.

The previous Law Commission was chaired by Justice BS Chauhan, who retired as chairperson of the 21st Law Commission in August 2018.
