The Allahabad High Court has granted interim protection to the 17th-century Hammam of Ali Vardi Khan, a heritage site in Agra’s Chipitola area, directing authorities to ensure its preservation. The court emphasized immediate action to prevent any harm to the monument, citing its historical importance.
The order came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Chandrapal Singh Rana, who alleged an imminent threat of demolition by unauthorized individuals.
A bench comprising Justice Salil Rai and Justice Samit Gopal directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Agra Police, and the Uttar Pradesh State Archaeology Department to coordinate efforts to safeguard the structure.
“The Commissioner of Police, Agra, and relevant authorities must ensure no damage is inflicted on the building. Adequate police force should be deployed to protect the site,” the court stated.
Rana’s counsel informed the court that despite repeated appeals, no steps had been taken to protect the Hammam, which dates back to 1620 AD, as confirmed by an ASI survey in October 2023. He argued that the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, mandates the ASI to protect such heritage sites.
The High Court has scheduled the next hearing for January 27, 2025, and clarified that the matter is not tied to the current bench.
